The Revelation of Surah Al-Mulk

Surah Al-Mulk was revealed in Makkah, consisting of thirty verses. It is the first Surah in the twenty-ninth Juz of the Quran, which is named “Juz Tabarak” after it.

According to most scholars, Surah Al-Mulk was not revealed all at once, and they did not agree on a single reason for its revelation. Some interpreters believe that it was revealed in response to the disbelievers who were whispering among themselves to harm the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). 

They would say to each other, “Keep your words secret so that the God of Muhammad does not hear them.” The revelation came to the Prophet through Angel Jibreel (PBUH), informing him of their plots.

The Names of Surah Al-Mulk and Their Meanings

The name of a chapter in the Quran often reflects its virtues and purpose, and Surah Al-Mulk is no exception. This Surah has several notable names, each revealing a different aspect of its significance:

1. Al-Mulk (الملك):

“Blessed is the One in Whose Hands rests all authority. And He is Most Capable of everything.”

2. Al-Munjia (المنجية):

Ibn Abbas reported that the early Muslims referred to this Surah as “Al-Munjia” because of its protective nature.

3. Al-Waqia (الواقية):

   Jabir (R.A.) reported:
   “The Prophet (PBUH) would not sleep until he had recited Surah Alif Lam Meem Tanzeel (Surah Sajdah) and Surah Tabarak (Surah Al-Mulk).”

   The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) stated:
   “There is a chapter in the Quran that will intercede on behalf of its reciter until it causes them to enter Paradise. It is: (Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion), Surah Al-Mulk.”

   Abdullah ibn Abbas (R.A.) said:
   “Recite Surah Al-Mulk yourself, and teach it to your wife, children, and neighbors because it grants salvation and firmly demands it from Allah.”

Notable Authentic Hadiths About Surah Al-Mulk

In this regard, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

{إِنَّ سُورَةً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ثَلاَثُونَ آيَةً شَفَعَتْ لِرَجُلٍ حَتَّى غُفِرَ لَهُ وَهِيَ سُورَةُ تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ}

“There is a surah in the Qur’an consisting of thirty verses that intercedes for a person until he is forgiven, and it is Surah Tabarak (Blessed Be He in Whose Hand is the Dominion).”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2891)

However, it is important to note that according to Ayat al-Kursi, no one can intercede on behalf of others in front of Allah without His permission:

{مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ}
“Who can intercede with Him except by His permission?”

Surah Al-Baqarah, (2:255)

Thus, while Surah Al-Mulk can intercede for the person who recites it regularly, this can only happen with Allah’s permission.

Weak Narrations Regarding Surah Al-Mulk

Despite the presence of strong hadiths, there are also some unauthentic narrations related to Surah Al-Mulk that should be carefully considered.

• Reciting Surah Al-Mulk in the Morning
  Another unauthentic narration claims that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited Surah Al-Mulk in the morning. However, the authentic hadith instructs Muslims to recite it every night, not every morning.

• Reciting Surah Al-Mulk Equals Worship on Laylat al-Qadr
  A fabricated narration states that reciting Surah Al-Sajda and Surah Al-Mulk between Maghrib and Isha’a prayers is equivalent to worshipping on Laylat al-Qadr.

 This narration is not authentic:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Sajda and Surah Al-Mulk between Maghrib and Isha’a is as if he spent Laylat al-Qadr in worship.”

• Naming a Son Muhammad and Teaching Surah Al-Mulk
  There is an unauthentic narration that claims if a Muslim names his son Muhammad and teaches him Surah Al-Mulk, he will be granted a special reward in Paradise. 

This narration is not reliable:
“If anyone has a son, names him Muhammad, and teaches him Surah Al-Mulk, Allah will resurrect him on a camel from Paradise, adorned with a crown of light, which he will proudly wear in Jannah.”
